From 1998 to 2004, Class 37, No. 37003 was undergoing restoration at the East Anglian Railway Museum, when it moved north to the Wensleydale Railway. During its stay 'new' buffer beam skirting was fitted, along with a number of coats of green undercoat. Here, No. 37003, is seen in July 2003 awaiting further attention.

After a failed attempt to preserve part of the Subury to Shelford line in 1968, the Stour Valley Railway Preservation Society leased the former goods yard and buildings at Chappel & Wakes Colne station.

During the 1980's the site was developed into a working museum with new buildings constructed and areas improved to increase public interest. It was public confusion which led to a name change in 1986, visitors said they were expecting a trip on a full railway rather than just a trip up and down the yard, hence the site was re-labelled 'The East Anglian Railway Museum'.
