Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway
The origins of the railway date back to 1968 when the Embsay and Grassington Preservation Society was formed to save the Grassington Branch from Skipton. This line remained open for freight traffic and a change in direction, literally, saw the group move to preserving part of the Embsay to Ilkley line which had recently closed.
Track lifting on the branch was well advanced, but the group took over the Embsay site and managed to save 880 yards of track to plan the site around. As the site was developed, further extensions have seen the line expand to the Bolton Abbey area, which was opened in 1998 by Sir William McAlpine.
