The first railway to reach Peterborough in June 1845 was the Nene Valley Railway from Blisworth via Northampton. The decline of the line did not materialise until the mid-1960's with passenger services ceasing fron Rugby in 1966. The neglected line finally closed in 1972 bringing to an end 127 years operation.

All was not lost though, in 1969, the East Anglia Locomotive Preservation Society created a Peterborough branch, which developed into the Nene Valley Railway in 1971 and three years later the Peterborough Development Corporation purchased the line between Yarwell junction and Longville.

Due to the unavailability of suitable locomotives and stock in the early 1970's, and the option to use continental stock, investigations were made concerning the conversion of the line to the `Berne gauge`. Some minor adjustments were made at Wansford and one overbridge was demolished along the line, as the line was brought back into use to the new gauge, reopening to passengers on June 1st, 1977

Directions by Road Wansford station is situated just off the A1 between the junctions for the A605 (Peterborough) and A47 (Peterborough/Leicester).
Directions by Public Transport By Train
Peterborough is the closest mainline station. For full train timetable information please use the National Rail website.

Walking from Peterborough Station
Turn right out of the mainline station then go over the pedestrian crossing and up to the dual carriageway. Turn right, walk under the footbridge and continue to the subway. Go through the subway and, shortly after, turn right through another (smaller) subway, then turn left up the ramp to meet the dual carriageway again. Continue alongside the dual carriageway until you reach a side road called Viersen Platz. Turn into this road and continue along it, keeping the ASDA carpark and store to your left. Ignore the signpost directing you to turn right down a footpath towards the river - that's the long route - instead carry on, with ASDA still on your left, until you come to a large blue footbridge over the river. Cross the footbridge, follow the footpath alongside the river, and you will soon come to twin railway bridges. Pass under these two bridges and then under another very low one a little further on. Next, take the left fork up to the Railworld frontage and the short footpath from there to the NVR station.
