The Malton to Whitby line was closed in March 1965, although the Malton to Pickering section remained open to freight for a further 12 months. Ironically this section is not part of the present day railway.
In 1967 a group of local people got together and over the next 5 years developed the start of the society that grew into the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
| Directions by Road | From the North Leave the A!(M) at J59 and head towards Darlington on the A167. Head east on the A1150 which joins the A66 towards Middlesborough. Jusr past Thornaby join the A19 southbound for two junctions and then take the A174 towards Nunthorpe. At Ormesby join the A171 towards Whitby. Grosmont is signposted from the A171 but is only accessible through narrow country lanes. From the South Pickering may be the preferred destination in the car, from the A1(M) at Dishforth, take the A168 towards Thirsk, then join the A170 to Helsley and Pickering. |

| Directions by Public Transport | By Train Grosmont, on the northern end of the line, is served by Esk Valley rail services. Visitors to the southern end of the line may reach Malton or York before using alternative transport to the railway. For full train timetable information please use the National Rail website.
