The Dart Valley Railway was formed in the late 1960's to restore the branch from Totnes to Buckfastleigh, which it successful re-opened in 1969. The company showed interest in the Paignton to Kingswear line when it was closed as part of the Beeching cuts and purchased the line which re-opened in 1973.
Changes in the tourist scene in the early 1980's forced operational changes on the company, which resulted in the Dart Valley Railway becoming an enthusiast run railway known as the South Devon Railway.
