The former British Railways depot at Carnforth was acquired and operated as a working museum after closure. A miniature railway was built on the site and it was a popular attraction for visitors

From the early 1980's the site was used for a more commercial basis, supplying maintenance for a number of charter operators. In 1994, a new company was formed to manage the activites on the site, West Coast Railways Company, and it was this company that made the decision in 1997, to close down the 'Preservation' site and hence restrict public access to the site.

Directions by Road This site is restricted to authorised personnel only
Directions by Public Transport Although access to the site is restricted, parts of the site are visible from Carnforth railway station.
